Education
To prepare participants to make sound choices for themselves, their families and their community, Adelante provides a variety of structured opportunities for growth. Adelante serves 25-30 women and their children ages 1-5 through classes held five days a week, five hours a day, for fall, winter and spring terms. Classes for adults include ESL, GED preparation (basic math, reading and writing), leadership development, personal growth and parenting. Adelante uses a popular education model placing academic learning within the context of their lives. Pre-school classes occur simultaneously with adult classes and use nationally recognized curricula. Three times a week, mothers and children participate in interactive literacy activities. Adelante holds monthly parent education nights and quarterly family/cultural celebrations. Shared responsibility and project ownership are emphasized at all levels. This involvement increases students' confidence in carrying out the basic tasks of their lives and in creating the kind of community they wish for their families.
