Adelante Chicas and families attend the Student and Family Conference at PSU
-by Cecilia Giron, Adelante Chicas Program Director-
Adelante Chicas has implemented a new initiative, Journey to College, which will focus on College readiness, financial literacy, and parent engagement. One of our objectives is to expose our participants to college at an earlier age.
Therefore, in partnership with the Oregon Middle School Outreach Consortium, Adelante Chicas participated at a special event at Portland State University where students and their families had the opportunity to learn more about college.
The Student and Family Conference took place on Saturday, February 4, 2012 from 9:30am to 2:30pm at Portland State University. Attendees learned more about the process of getting into college, paying for college, being successful in college, and learning about exciting careers in Oregon! Activities included workshops from university admissions staff and hands-on activities for students. It was very empowering to see minority students and their families receiving and learning about vital college information.
Adelante Chicas had the opportunity to take 120 participants from Neil Armstrong Middle School and Evergreen Middle School to the conference.
Many thanks to all of the partners and collaborators that made this event possible for our children. Especially to The Oregon Middle School Outreach Consortium team for putting together a successful conference!
Over the next year Journey to College will keep the Adelante Chicas program staff, participants and families very busy with college preparation and outreach. Learn more about the upcoming field trip to Linfield College (March 16) and stay up-to-date with this exciting initative at the Journey to College webpage.
