A Graduation to Remember: Reflections on Board Service from Wendy Weissman

As Wendy Weissman wrapped up six years of thoughtful, values-driven leadership on the Adelante Mujeres Board of Directors—most recently as Board Secretary—she found herself at a different kind of graduation: one of Adelante’s preschool graduation ceremonies. The timing was poetic! In the reflection below, Wendy shares what that day meant to her, and how it encapsulates the spirit of Adelante Mujeres.

In early June I attended one of Adelante Mujeres’ preschool graduation ceremonies for about 30 of our young program participants and their parents at W L Henry Elementary School in Hillsboro. My visit coincided with the completion of six years of service (two 3-year terms) on Adelante’s Board of Directors—I too was “graduating!”

The joy, the sense of pride, the eagerness and the anticipation of what might be ahead filled the room—apparent on the faces of the children and their delighted parents. Those same emotions also filled my heart, as I thought about the importance of Adelante’s programming and presence in the Latine community during these very troubled times.

In that moment in the auditorium, however, there was only beauty, possibility, and a deep sense of accomplishment for those families. Our future community, business, and social justice leaders were being honored for their first VERY big milestone. I couldn’t have been more proud of my own small contributions in helping to guide Adelante towards its best possible future. A most, most excellent graduation “gift.”
