Tiny Robots and High Tech Art: Inside Our New Chicas Makerspace

The time has finally come for the unveiling of the Adelante Mujeres Chicas Makerspace! With our friends from First Tech Federal Credit Union, we hosted a small “soft opening” of the new Markerspace in our brand new center in Forest Grove, dedicated to empowering Latina girls by providing them with opportunities to engage in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) activities.

First Tech graciously sponsored the Chicas Makerspace, making a huge investment in the Latina youth in our community.

The Chicas Makerspace will be a safe place for Latina youth in grades 3-12 who participate in our Chicas Youth Development Program to come and experience the wonders of STEAM projects.

The Chicas Makerspace is loaded with high-tech fun including a 3D printer, computer-generated sticker making, tiny programmable robots, and a plethora of crafts supplies. During the soft opening event, Chicas staff members demonstrated a few of the activities, and it’s safe to say that the Makerspace is a pretty fun space to create in!

Angela Valenzuela, a Chicas Program Youth Facilitator and Project Developer, headed up the creation of the Chicas Makerspace.

First Tech’s funding has helped open doors for the Latina Youth in our program to have access to STEAM tools they wouldn’t otherwise have experience with. This will have a great impact on the 42% of Latina youth in the Chicas program that go on to study STEAM related fields in higher education.” - Angela Valenzuela, Chicas Youth Development Advocate

A huge MUCHAS GRACIAS shout out to the amazing people at First Tech for believing in the importance of Latina youth empowerment!

Here is a first look at the space!
