Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT): Strengthening Parent-Child Relationships

Recently at our Clínica Esperanza, an innovative therapeutic program was introduced to support and strengthen relationships between parents and their children in our community. This approach, known as Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), offers a unique alternative to traditional methods by placing parents at the center of the therapeutic process.

What is this therapy about?

Unlike many interventions where the therapist works directly with the child, this model focuses on coaching parents in real time as they interact with their child.  From another room, our therapists guide parents using video and audio equipment, which offer immediate feedback and practical strategies to improve communication, emotional connection, and positive discipline.

The goal is to empower parents to become the primary agents of change in their child’s emotional and behavioral development.

Furthermore, each session is recorded. This helps with additional training and support for both the parents and our therapists.

Who is it for?

This therapy is designed for families with children between 3 and 6½ years old, especially those experiencing:

  • Frequent tantrums

  • Difficulty with emotional regulation

  • Aggressive behaviors at home, school, or daycare

  • Feelings of frustration or guilt among parents

Beyond addressing specific behaviors, the program focuses on building stronger, healthier family relationships.

A proven approach

PCIT is supported by strong research and has proven to be highly effective in improving parent and child relationships and helping children regulate their emotions. One of the most valuable and unique aspects of our program is that it is offered in Spanish, helping reduce language barriers for Spanish-speaking families in our community.

PCIT sessions take place once a week at Clínica Esperanza, and the program typically lasts between six months and up to a year, depending on family progress. Parents are expected to practice at home for at least five minutes a day to help reinforce what they have learned during the sessions. While parents are often adults who participate, our program is open to any primary caregivers (parents, grandparents, etc.) with the child they care for. Consistency and active participation are key to achieving successful outcomes.

Our therapists delivering this program have received specialized training to ensure high-quality care. Thanks to funding and support from Oregon Health Authority and Health Share of Oregon, our team has been able to participate in dedicated training programs to bring this evidence-based intervention to local families.

Access and referrals

The program currently serves families in Washington County and offers support options for those without insurance, including assistance programs. Families can access the program by contacting Clínica Esperanza at (971) 441-0460 or using our online form. Clínica Esperanza staff can assist with the process. An initial evaluation is conducted to determine if the program is a good fit.

A valuable resource for the community

This program represents an important opportunity for Latine families seeking guidance and support in raising young children. By equipping parents with practical tools and ongoing coaching, it helps build stronger, more resilient family relationships.
